| I am considering a new GPS unit and I want opinions. I won't mention parameters, other than the fact that I currently have an iPhone and a Magellan eXplorist 500 that is having some issues. Ready?? Go... |

Yet another Maggie bites the dust for you? I hope you have finally learned that lesson. I have never owned anything but a Garmin. The new paperless Garmins or a Delorme sound promising, but I wouldn't get rid of all my CS Garmins yet.
Need to borrow a Garmin CS again while you make up your mind? |

Uh...NO Glenn, I do not need to borrow your 60csx or whatever it was that had me walking around in circles when I used it! Mine still works fine, it's an issue with the power cable connecting to the back. I am not adverse to Garmin; Ido have a Nuvi! |

Garmin Oregon 550 and Dakota series have tri-axial electronic compasses. This means that you do not have to hold the unit steady and level to have the compass work correctly. The Colorado/Oregon 400 and earlier have dual-axial electronic compasses and will display the hold level verbiage to the point of annoyance. The 550 also has a camera - 1Mpixal model - which is perfectly fine for posting to the web site.
What Garmin needs to do is to put in real 801.11g WiFi instead of their proprietary bluetooth like crap. They also have to lift the 8M limitation on Geocaching GPX files.
The Colorado/Oregons have a nasty habit of ignoring Groundspeak gpx files over 8M and leaving one in the field without any geocaching listings. I have been burnt by this lame limitation on more than one occasion.
The Colorado/Oregon/Dakotas do not have any file managers, so there is no way to correct the above loss of all geocaches problem in the field - the first time was at GeoWoodstock7 in Tennessee. It really SUCKS to rely on others to get the coordinates that were correctly downloaded to the unit - only to have the file silently rejected for a bullshit firmware limitation.
Until Garmin gets off their butts and gets these issues corrected, I would seriously consider a DeLorme P-40 as my next GPS. And Joseph, your lame ass 60csx suffers the same afflictions mentioned above and then some. The 60csx is just a fat dumb and happy cash cow to the folks at Olathe, just like the people who use them. |

8M of GPX files? That's being overly optimistic.

Then how come on one cache we both wound up at a different location than we thought. And my GPS was usually 'on target' and yours was pointing "way over there, no .. over there.." at some other caches? Magnetic drift? |

Technically a Cash Cow is not considered fat, but it typically has three feet in the grave.
I still love the Muddys!!
I hope to see you all at Beavers Victory Party on 27-Jan-2010. |
